This Series could also be called Survival Guide to Hard Times. Its purpose is to enable living to continue in the face of job loss, inflation, market crash, limited fossil fuel, and/or economic depression. These books make unique contributions to the Money Problems, otherwise known as the New Economy, answering to any or all of these factors.:Inflation is reducing the purchasing power of the dollar. Out of control spending has created us as a debtor nation in the world community. Less oil available by whatever means means transportation problems that will realign our entire culture.

For some time, I have been promoting raising rabbits, two Does and a Buck, in your back yard as a source of meat for your family and fertilizer for the garden. The future looks as if this is more important that just becoming independent. From our Home Page, you can find a way to get two free pamphlets about raising them and eating them. There have been enough requests for more information that we have added this book to the New Economy Series.
One purpose of this book is to provide an alternative meat source for the family. It is not meant to be an agricultural tome on animal husbandry- merely sufficient information to enable the raising of a small animal as a meat source, and at the same time, provide a Sustainable Garden to provide an independent food source for the family.
The voice of experience is my authority. What I described worked for us and grew to a commercial endeavor that lasted ten years. Now, it is working again, only this time with two Does and a Buck, in our back yard.
I do not describe show rabbits, or with those raised as pets, or with those raised for other purposes, such as their fur. They each have their own special requirements and they are beyond the scope of this book. In most cases, these animals are less than ideal for a meat source.
At the same time, a sustainable garden is achieved by growing feed for the rabbits that in turn, produce fertilizer for the garden, that produces more rabbit feed, and that produces. . . .
The upside is that the vegetable garden is also feeding your family.
Rabbits? Sustainable Garden? Why All The Fuss?
In case you haven’t noticed, we are running out of the cheap energy that runs agricultural machinery, food processing machinery, transportation to market, and getting us to the big supermarkets.
Oh, sure, we’ll sort it out and come up with viable alternatives, but that takes time.
What are you going to eat during the down time? Think about THAT.
Maybe you can’t stand the thought of eating those pretty bunnies? Well, you have tolerated eating all those pretty little chicks, and calves, and piglets. You will get used to it, or you may get mighty hungry.
Sustainable Garden?
That’s because you are used to eating every day, all through the year. It’s a funny thing about gardening in your own back yard. The plants use up the nutrients and then the soil will not support plant life. You must replace the nutrients. That’s where the rabbits come in. Not only do they supply a highly nutritious, low fat meat, but they supply a rich animal manure that can be applied to the garden without composting. That will become important as most of the fossil fule based, chemical fertilizers become scarce.
So, we have an animal, eating produce from the garden, producing the nutrients that the plants need to grow more rabbit food, and all the while you have food for your family. Plan on about 40 meat animals; about 200 pounds per Doe per year, and the two Does in your back yard will keep your family going. The Buck is there to supervise and make sure it happens.
This is not a get rich quick scheme, it is a survival plan for you and your family.
